WEPGen WEPGen is a small utility used to produce Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) keys. These keys are used to encrypt data transmitted across a wireless network based on 802.11b or Wi-Fi. When working with a Wi-Fi network connection, it is considered good practice to enable WEP encryption on both the Access Point and the wireless Network Interface Cards (NICs) installed on the client systems. Without WEP, data transmitted across the Wi-Fi network goes unencrypted. Other users can hence connect to the wireless network and examine or "sniff" the data as it is transmitted. WEPGen is an easy way to generate WEP keys (similar to passwords) needed by the wireless Access Points and when configuring a wireless network connection on the client machine. Because wireless networks are used by a variety of different platforms, the WEPGen utility was produced to work across different systems. Written in Java, WEPGen is a cross-platform utility that runs on a variety of systems such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. WEPGen requires Java 1.3 or better to run. You may either download an 'executable' JAR file or run directly from this page via Java Web Start.
